The recent release of "India Employment Report 2024" raises concerns about the high number of unemployed young people in India.

The "India Employment Report 2024" is a close examination of employment conditions in India, especially for young people. It is a collaborative effort by the Institute for Human Development (IHD) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). This report uses data from the National Sample Surveys and Periodic Labour Force Surveys between 2000 and 2022. To provide the most recent picture, it also includes 2023 data from the ILO.

This report reveals a surprising trend. The proportion of educated young people among the unemployed has grown considerably in recent years. In 2000, 54.2% of unemployed individuals were young people with secondary education or higher. This figure has risen sharply to 65.7% by 2022.

The report doesn't just focus on quantity but also quality of employment. Even young people who find jobs might face challenges. The report indicates that the quality of work for young people might be lower compared to adults, with the possibility of unpaid family work or stagnant wages.

The "India Employment Report 2024" paints a concerning picture of youth unemployment in India. By acknowledging the generation at risk and taking concrete steps to address the skills gap and improve job quality, India can unlock the immense potential of its young population and pave the way for a more prosperous and inclusive future.
