On International Women's Day, Sudha Murthy was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. she is a renowned Indian philanthropist and social worker. The news was shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet celebrating Ms. Murthy's contributions to society. 

 

In short, who is Sudha Murthy?

 

Ms. Murthy, 73, is the wife of N. R. Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, a leading global technology company. She is known for her commitment to social causes, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and rural development. She has established several schools and libraries across India and actively supports initiatives that empower women and underprivileged communities. 

 

In recognition of her tireless social work, Sudha Murthy has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, two of India's highest civilian honors. She is also the mother of Akshata Murthy, who is married to Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the United Kingdom.

The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, has the authority to nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha in recognition of their exceptional contributions in fields like arts, literature, sciences, and social services. Sudha Murthy was chosen as one of these 12 distinguished members. Prime Minister Modi, in his tweet, highlighted Ms. Murthy's nomination as a powerful testament to India's "Nari Shakti" (women's power), underlining the potential and strength of women in shaping the nation's future. He expressed his best wishes for a productive parliamentary tenure for Ms. Murthy. 

 

Currently in Thailand, Ms. Murthy expressed her delight at the nomination, particularly on the occasion of International Women's Day. She thanked Prime Minister Modi and acknowledged the new platform this appointment provides to serve the country.
